Preparing for the Halifax summit: Reflections on past summits

Following a brief discussion of the evolution of summitry in general, this article addresses issues affecting the conduct of G7 summits in particular. The author surveys the development of the Summit from an economic forum to a mechanism for more general foreign policy coordination by Summit leaders. Two final sections recount the history of Canadian participation in this process, with reference to the multilateral orientation of Canada's foreign policy.
