Increasing trend in ecosystem-scale photosynthetic efficiency in the Yellow River Basin since 2000 caused by afforestation and climate change

ABSTRACT

We used the leaf area index (LAI) and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) to represent vegetation greenness and photosynthetic capacity, respectively, and the ratio of SIF to LAI (SIF/LAI) as an indicator of ecosystem-scale photosynthetic efficiency. We analyzed the spatial-temporal dynamics of SIF/LAI and its driving factors in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) of China from 2000 to 2021. The annual increase rate was 1.89% for SIF and 1.21% for LAI. The greater increase in SIF relative to LAI led to a significant increase in SIF/LAI ratio from 2000 to 2021, with an annual increase of 0.63%. This suggests an enhanced photosynthetic capacity per unit LAI over time. Forest cover explained 48% of the SIF/LAI rising trend, followed by temperature (26%) and the standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index (SPEI, 16%). Regionally, the SIF/LAI had annual increasing rates of 1.25% and 1.10% in the upper and middle reaches of the YRB, respectively. Meanwhile, the SIF/LAI of the source region and lower reaches did not show a significant trend. This study deepens the understanding of the relationship between vegetation greening and photosynthetic capacity, which has implications for ecosystem management.

Résumé

Nous avons utilisé l’indice de surface foliaire (LAI) et la fluorescence chlorophyllienne induite par rayonnement solaire (SIF) pour représenter la verdeur de la végétation et la capacité photosynthétique, respectivement, ainsi que le rapport SIF/LAI comme indicateur d’efficacité photosynthétique à l’échelle de l’écosystème. Nous avons analysé la dynamique spatio-temporelle du rapport SIF/LAI et de ses déterminants dans le bassin de la Rivière Jaune (YRB), en Chine, de 2000 à 2021. Le taux annuel d’augmentation était de 1,89% pour la SIF et de 1,21% pour le LAI. L’augmentation plus importante de la SIF comparativement au LAI a mené à une augmentation significative du rapport SIF/LAI de 2000 à 2021, avec une augmentation annuelle de 0,63%. Cela suggère une capacité photosynthétique accrue pour chaque unité d’augmentation du LAI dans le temps. Le couvert forestier expliquait 48% de la tendance d’augmentation du rapport SIF/LAI, suivi de la température (26%) et de l’indice précipitations-évapotranspiration centré réduit (SPEI, 16%). Régionalement, le rapport SIF/LAI montrait des taux annuels d’augmentation de 1,25% et 1,10% dans les tronçons supérieurs et moyens du YRB, respectivement. Le rapport SIF/LAI de la région source et des tronçons inférieurs ne montrait pas de patron temporel significatif. Cette étude bonifie la compréhension de la relation entre le verdissement de la végétation et la capacité photosynthétique, qui a des implications pour l’aménagement écosystémique.
