In Memory of Professor Jean-Pierre Lehmann

29 August 1945–21 December 2017

The Editorial Board of Global Economic Review is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Jean-Pierre Lehmann in last December. It was during the conference on Asian industrial development in Seoul in the early 1990s, where I first met Professor Lehmann. Although Professor Lehmann was based on IMD in Switzerland, he already had had a great interest in economic development in Korea and Asia.

Professor Lehmann had gladly joined the Global Economic Review’s Editorial Board as the European Co-Editor ever since it was first published in 1997 by Yonsei University. He genuinely dedicated himself to Global Economic Review with his particular interests and passion in the dynamics of firms and industries in Asia. His brilliant insights and visions in economics and business helped Global Economic Review to grow as a respected academic journal.

In tribute to Professor Lehmann, we dedicate this June issue as Lehmann Memorial Issue.

We have Professor Lehmann’s biography on the next page, courtesy of the family.

It was an honor to have him as our colleague and mentor. He will be missed.

JEAN-PIERRE LEHMANN

French and American

PhD Oxford University (St Antony’s College)

Jean-Pierre Lehmann was Professor of International Political Economy at IMD and visiting professor in the Faculty of Business and Economics at Hong Kong University.

His areas of special interest included globalization, global governance, trade and development, the role of business in the reduction of poverty and inequality and the socio-economic, cultural, and business dynamics of Asia. He acted in various leading capacities in a number of public policy institutes and organizations, as an adviser to governments and corporations, on the board of journals and reviews, and as a frequent commentator in the international media. He was the author of several books and numerous articles and papers primarily dealing with globalization, Asia and the international political economy.

In 1995, Professor Lehmann launched the Evian Group, an international coalition of corporate, government, and opinion leaders, united by a common vision of enhancing global prosperity for the benefit of all by fostering an open, inclusive, and equitable global market economy in a rules-based multilateral framework. The Evian Group developed as a leading global voice on international trade and investment issues that acted as a forum for dialogue and a birthplace of ideas; it also engaged actively in advocacy to counter the forces of protectionism and nationalism.

Prior to joining IMD, Professor Lehmann’s academic and business careers encompassed activities in virtually all Asian and Western European countries, as well as North America. He was founding director of the European Institute of Japanese Studies (EIJS) at the Stockholm School of Economics (from 1992) and Professor of East Asian Political Economy and Business. He established and directed the East Asian operations of InterMatrix, a London-based business strategy research and consulting organization (1986–1992). During this time, he was concurrently Affiliated Professor of International Business at the London Business School.

Previously, Jean-Pierre Lehmann was Associate Professor of International Business at INSEAD, Visiting Professor at the Bologna Center (Italy) of the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, twice Visiting Professor and Japan Foundation Fellow at the University of Tohoku (Japan), and founding director of the Center for Japanese Studies at the University of Stirling (Scotland), where he also taught East Asian history.
