Nurturing tourism’s research academe – a retrospective on René Baretje-Keller

Acknowledgements

Much gratitude is expressed to some exceptional informants that I drew heavily upon during the preparation of this testimonial. They were chosen because of their extensive engagements with M. Baretje as students, scholars, or collaborators. Each provided me with marvelous insights into his character, career, and contributions. I had the difficult task of having to select “sound bites” from their many eloquent remarks for inclusion in this more collective story. In particular, the perspectives of Dr. Gérard Guibilato, Professor Emeritus, ESSEC Business School; Dr Gaëtane Gambier-Thurot, Director General, Ecole de Commerce Spécialisée Tourisme; Dr Christine Richter, International Tourism Consultant; Dr Marion Joppe, Professor, University of Guelph; Dr Jafar Jafari, University of Wisconsin; and Dr Paul Wilkinson Professor Emeritus, York University provided the colour to the story told. In addition, I synthesized the many comments of academics and practitioners expressed on-line (particularly via TRINET) concerning M. Baretje’s many contributions to their careers as well as the advancement of tourism. I hope to have captured their overriding sentiments, but apologize if I have not.
