ABSTRACT

The discovery, isolation and application in medical practice of the first antibiotic products opened up new prospects in the development of biological science and practical medicine. As a result of extensive screening programs including thousands of microbial cultures more than 6000 antibiotic substances were discovered. A number of processes were developed to include them in various formulations for human and animal therapy, agriculture and food industry.

The research efforts in this field led to important developments in neighbouring areas and to the appearance of new branches of science. Genetic selection and genetic engineering received a serious impact which resulted in great improvement in the productivity of original strains. New engineering approaches were used in order to solve the technical problems for optimization of biotechnological processes.

We have tried to analyze the present state and the direction of future research efforts in the Institute for Industrial Microbiology, Razgrad, with no claims to exhaust the subject completely.

We believe that areas on which we have to focus our attention for the improvement of microbial synthesis are the following:

-

screening of strains and new biologically active substances;

-

selection and genetic techniques;

-

physiological control of formation of the biologically active substances;

-

bioengineering aspects of optimization;

-

raw materials for microbials synthesis.
