Recent Developments in Hemicellulose Hydrolysis by Submerged Culture

Pages 11-14 | Published online: 15 Apr 2014

ABSTRACT

Current trends and perspectives of hemicellulose hydrolysis accompanied by lignocellulose hydrolysis are reviewed with emphasis on bioreactor analysis and cultivation conditions. Oxygen transfer, adsorption kinetics, alternative species, enzymes re-use, substrate pretreatment, and agitation are the main topics considered. General research and application perspectives uncovered include: development of potential application of hemicellulases in the treatment of cellulase pulps for partial or total removal of xylan, further testing of partial liquifaction of plant cell walls by xylanases based on plants used to produce textile fibres as potential targets for enzymatic treatment by xylanase-producing organisms, finding species which are compatible with contaminants associated with wastes, not to limit the improvement of biodegradation by fungal treatment, and other.
