ABSTRACT
Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is a condition associated with substantial morbidity and mortality that has been described in Asia, the Americas, and Europe. Different hypotheses for the etiological agent of the disease were promoted including even the possibility a new virus to be a man-made one. Simultaneously to the attempts for isolation, a variety of molecular techniques were used for identification and initial characterization of the viruses associated with SARS. This review summarizes the present information regarding the SARS viruses and the disease, produced by them. Till now, more than 8,400 persons have been reported to be infected; the case-fatality rate among persons with illness is approximately 9%.
