ABSTRACT

Blood units from regular donations are not screened for Human Parvovirus B19 (B19), even thîugh it can be transmitted via blood products. We estimated the prevalence of B19 in volunteer blood donors of our blood bank. Donor units were screened for B19 by aemagglutination assay ingel and positive units analyzed by Dot-Gold immunoassay (Dot-GIA). B19 screening was carried out on 5560 blood donated units, of which B19 viraemia were detected in five (0.09%). Repeatedly positive samples were confirmed in Dot-GIA. Haemagglutination in gel is simple, cheap and rapid assay, suitable for B19 screening of blood donations, which would reduce the viral load in blood products.
