ABSTRACT
Twenty-one Streptococcus thermophilus strains were isolated form homemade yoghourts obtained from different areas in Bulgaria. The isolated strains were determined by polyphase analysis including classical microbiological, biochemical, physiological, as well as molecular methods including PCR amplification with genus-specific primers and sequencing of the genes responsible for 16S ribosomal RNA. A recently proposed new method for intraspecies discrimination based on single strand DNA conformation polymorphism was applied for the first time on the Streptococcus genus representatives.
