Abstract
Post‐Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other psychological reactions to trauma are compensable under various compensation schemes and constitute a significant portion of compensation payments in Australia. The presence of post‐trauma disorders can also form the basis for a defence in criminal cases. Under such circumstances, the motivation to malinger or exaggerate symptoms is present Issues in the assessment of malingered PTSD are reviewed and discussed. Some psychometric instruments have utility in the assessment of malingering, and electrophysiological measurement may also be useful. It is concluded, however, that the assessment of malingered PTSD presents a formidable task and that more research is required to identify effective tools for the detection of deception in PTSD claimants.
