Automatic calibration of the AWBM

Abstract

The method of automatic calibration of the AWBM rainfall-runoff model is based on the structure of the model and is unique to that model, not a general-purpose method. The method is built into the computer code of the model to facilitate its use. The method is tested on data from 37 catchments spread among all States and the Northern Territory with a group in the Murray–Darling Basin. The method gave very good results in reproducing average annual runoff and the monthly distribution of runoff, reflecting the use of those metrics within the calibration method. The results of reproducing very low daily flows required minor manual adjustment of a single model parameter after the automatic calibration. This is simple if that was a main objective in the use of the model as provision for manual adjustment of all parameters is available. The automatic calibration method is incorporated in most versions of the AWBM that have been produced in the last 15 years.
