Abstract
This is an impressive study. It concerns the effects on Ecuador of the construction and use of the railroad that links Quito and Guayaquil. Although begun in the 1860s its construction was not completed until 1908. Anyone who knows of the terribly difficult topography of Ecuador, the nation's turbulent politics, and the ubiquitous poverty will know why the railroad's construction took so long and why it came to be recognised among Ecuadorians of the time as, ‘la obra redentora’.
