Abstract
Azorín y el concepto de clásico is the latest scholarly work to be produced by well-known Spanish novelist and short story writer Carme Riera (1948 – ), who is also an academic specialising in Spanish literature at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. In this short study, Riera takes as her subject the canonical figure of Spanish novelist, essayist and literary critic José Martínez Ruiz (1873–1967), better known by his pen name of Azorín, under which he published from 1904. Riera's discussion focuses on Azorín 's relationship with the so-called ‘classics’ of Peninsular literature, tracing the changes in his stance with regard to canonical writers and their works.
