Increasing motivation for physical rehabilitation: A brief psychological intervention

Pages 121-124 | Accepted 01 Oct 2003, Published online: 15 Aug 2006

Abstract

Motivation is essential for physical rehabilitation because it ensures patients continue to change. This case study describes how an older patient having difficulty with rehabilitation was motivated to change. It suggests that unhelpful assumptions held by patients and staff may hinder rehabilitation. A brief assessment and intervention using motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioural techniques to set rehabilitation goals is described.
