Abstract
The change in the role of English in the Malaysian Language Policy has brought with it tremendous challenges. Extending the role of English from a subject taught in the school curriculum to a language operating as a medium of instruction for the teaching of science and mathematics (TESME) has necessitated the development of a nation wide teacher preparation and support programme.
The paper begins with a description of the change in the policy and goes on to examine the challenges the MOE faced in implementing the policy nationwide within a limited time frame. This will be followed by a description of the retraining programme developed by the Teacher Education Division of the Ministry of Education (MOE) to prepare the teachers of mathematics and science to implement the change in their classrooms. In addition the role of the different educational agencies to support the process is also included. The paper concludes by discussing some of the critical issues arising from an innovation in progress.
