SUMMARY
This study contains a harvest model of water hyacinth which is applicable in natural waterways for nutrient removal at maximum sustainable yield (MSY). When the concentration of inorganic nitrogen in water (WN ) (and the concentration of phosphorus in water (WP ) in the case of WN < 0.164) is measured, MSY and the potential of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removal from water by harvesting water hyacinth can be calculated from this model. The harvest biomass and nutrient removal are dependent on the concentration of nutrient in the water and the farming surface area. In this case study of Bangkok, Thailand, the potential for nitrogen and phosphorus removal is compared between input and output of nutrient in the natural waterways. The potential in the current condition reaches rates of 1.25% and 0.006%, respectively, while the potential of expected application in the future reaches rates of 1.45% and 0.007%, respectively.
