SUMMARY
Conservation projects have been initiated at a greater rate around the world as nations discover the increasing amount of land degraded and rate of species extinction in their regions. In this paper, we define the theoretical framework being used in a Community-Based Conservation Management project in China and Vietnam. While the cultures and political structures of the participating countries and institutions may be limiting factors to the implementation of community-based activities, we believe that definition and perception of terminology used in community-based conservation projects is important to an international development programme involving seven universities located in three countries. Expectations might not be the same as in developed and/or democratic countries. The main goal still remains, to integrate public education and involvement into conservation activities in order to better protect the environment. Our perception is not to change the political foundation of other countries but to give them tools for sustainable resource use.
