Abstract

An online water quality management system (OWQMS), one of the main components of Environmental Internet of Things (EIoT), comprising online water quality monitoring subsystem, digital data transmission subsystem, and data processing parts, was established to manage an urban scenic river, Xinglin Bay, Xiamen, China. Three operational modes, including supplementing reclaimed domestic wastewater and fresh surface water from the Xinglin Bay to maintain the river water level, and cycling landscape water to stabilize the water quality, were examined. No water deterioration was detected throughout the period, and therefore OWQMS was proved to be effective in managing the scenic river and keeping the quality of landscape water stable in the past four years. Moreover, strong self-purification in the river water on pollutants, including nitrogen and phosphate degradation, was observed. The outcomes showed that OWQMS was useful and effective for the management of scenic waters.
