The ‘true value’ of sports is its ‘commodity value’. A critical discourse of Ideology

Pages 63-69 | Published online: 24 Jan 2012

Abstract

The sociological approach to sport outlined in this paper is concerned with the processes through which structural and functional exchanges between values inherent in sports and social values are established, used and transformed and specifically with whether values intrinsic to sports are at present getting lost or whether they are kept in a productive balance with social values. In the former case this transformation process would effect a change of the sport system toward an external instrumentalized field of action activities.
