Secularisation and the Future of Christianity

Pages 145-160 | Published online: 22 Aug 2006

Abstract

The article is not an account of a debate. Rather it summarises a position arrived at over 40 years with respect to Secularisation. It deals with master narratives, the differences between Catholic and Protestant trajectories, with European exceptionalism, and the varying consequences of ‘spirituality’ and individualism.

Notes

This is conceived as a summary statement of position over the years 1965–2005 and was delivered as a Keynote Address to a lay audience (in sociological terms) in Dallas, Texas, on 21 January 2005, which had met to discuss “The Future of World Christianity”.
