Abstract
The commission to undertake an evaluation of quality assessment in Wales provided an opportunity for an evaluation of the future of quality assessment, that is, what it should be like in the future. The results of this unusual form of evaluation, which is based on a combination of fundamental theory, current trends as shown in the literature, and the views and informed opinions of all the participants and myself, are compared both with the current proposals of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and the first report of the Joint Planning Group for Quality Assurance in Higher Education. Agreement is significantly closer with the former than with the latter. Reference is also made to the developing debate on standards in higher education.
