Abstract
A charter of student rights and responsibilities was developed as a component of quality improvement in an Australian university. The charter was developed collaboratively with students against a background of substantial organisational change following institutional amalgamation, a general commitment amongst staff to student growth and development, and the increasing concern in Australia to ensure the quality, relevance and value of higher education. The development and implementation of the charter is outlined in relation to considerations of quality in higher education. The contribution of the charter to quality improvement within the university is examined through the three areas of adoption of the charter, implementation, and outcomes.
