Notes

I use the term second generation inclusively; as a synonym with children of immigrants, it includes those who have been born and raised in Italy (the 2.0 generation) as well as those who were born elsewhere but arrived in Italy by the age of 13 (the 1.5 generation).

Indeed, a body of work on the second generation has already begun to appear (e.g. Andall 2002; Cologna and Breviglieri 2003; Colombo et al. 2009; Fischer and Fischer 2002; Queirolo Palmas 2006). A not insignificant body of research engages the model of segmented assimilation, developed to describe and predict the trajectory of immigrant youth in the United States (see especially Portes and Rumbaut 2001a, b), and brought to the attention of Italian speakers by Ambrosini and Molina (2004).
