Abstract
Examination of the lumbar spine in cases of low back pain will often produce no clear diagnostic picture. Standard investigations, including blood count, x-ray, magnetic resonance imaging, and computerised tomography scan may also contribute little. Six cases are reported which show lesions that were only visualised on scanning the sacroiliac joint, five of whom were HLA B27 negative. CT or MR scans of the sacroiliac joints should be considered in cases of undiagnosed low back pain.
