Time off Work Following Whiplash Injury: Does Sick Pay Make Any Difference?

Abstract

83 patients who had suffered whiplash injury of the cervical spine in motor vehicle accidents were entered into a prospective study to determine whether paid sickness leave had any effect on taking time off work. It was found that receiving sick pay made no difference as to whether or not a patient took time off work following whiplash injury. The mean length of time off work was found to be numerically less for those in receipt of sick pay but the figure just failed to reach significance.
