Abstract
The definition of patellar instability remains unclear. However it is considered by some authors to be the most common knee disorder affecting active youth. Poor patella engagement and failure to stay within the trochlea are the two main causes. Iliotibial band tightness which was thought to be the main cause of non-traumatic patellar instability is challenged with some new evidence-based research. This pathway leads to some new clinical tests based on a failure more of the static structures rather than dynamic. Management of this debilitating syndrome is also challenged using non-taping techniques and highlighting the evidence behind surgical procedures.
