COMPUTERS AS TEST BEDS FOR TEACHING SYSTEMS

Pages 53-65 | Published online: 09 Jul 2006

Abstract

This paper first seeks to justify discussion of the potential use of computers by referring to the increasing training problems confronting our society; the rapid development of computers as components of communications systems; and the recent advances in programmed instruction.

After reference to a variety of training situations where computers can make a unique contribution, the concept of a Computer Monitored Programmed Course is introduced. Such systems would use the facility of the computer to store, examine and present data with great rapidity, whilst capitalising on the best of instructional media which are currently available. Such systems would have the important feature of diagnosing areas where improvements to the system would pay off.

Finally, the paper proposes, for further discussion, a course of action for the investigation and development of computer‐based instruction.
