Abstract
The elements of an E.R.E. program are described and an account is given of the task of preparing such programs. Some strategies for controlling the behaviour of the learner by means of program design are outlined. These strategies were developed during the course of single case studies undertaken with functionally illiterate adults who received tuition for the E.R.E.
