Abstract
A learner control strategy for use in CAI sequences is presented and is compared to a machine control strategy. The procedure followed was to write two sequences to introduce students to the language and functional design of the CLIP computer; one employing each strategy.
The sequences were taken by 26 students, after which they were examined on the content and answered attitude questionnaires.
An important result of this investigation is that students taking the sequence with the strategy of learner control, learn as much as students using the machine control strategy; they also retain most of what they learn, whereas students taking the machine controlled sequence forget a significant amount after two weeks. Furthermore, they appear to have a slightly more favourable attitude to their lessons.
