Further Education on Television

Pages 118-123 | Published online: 09 Jul 2006

Abstract

This article outlines the general scope and purpose of the BBC Further Education Department, its organisation and administration. It sees educational broadcasting as part of a comprehensive system and stresses the importance of audience participation. Emphasis is laid on the innovative role of educational broadcasting and in planning for change and constant development. Three broad areas of further education are distinguished: programs for institutions and learning groups; courses for individual study; liberal arts and cultural programs. These three areas are not regarded as mutually exclusive, and instances are given where they overlap each other. A short appraisal is made of the popularity of the programs and the methods by which this is measured.
