Objective Course Design

Pages 364-376 | Published online: 28 Nov 2010

Abstract

The use of programmed learning in the original narrow sense tended towards the use of a sub‐system within a whole system which was not aligned to accepting it. A Rolls‐Royce component in a mass produced old car is destined to cause problems. It is only in the analysis and planned strategy applied to the whole system or course that the concept will begin to bear the true and valuable fruit.

In this Paper, a justification has been developed for a strategy and the whole strategy then described and illustrated as it was applied to the development of a course for the Royal Australian Navy.

The method developed was prompted by Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives which has been paralled by the author into a taxonomy of training in seven levels.

These seven levels are then used to synthesize an objective achievement which produced a module for the course. The control of pupils undergoing this course is then described and involves the use of PERT network scheduling as a means of sequencing and directing a free flowing course situation.
