Classification and Indexing for Educational Documentation

Pages 199-207 | Published online: 09 Jul 2006

Abstract

In the system of Education, channels for information transfer form an important sub‐system, and libraries/resource centres play a major role. Their technical equipment includes schemes for classification and indexing complex subject matter, and traditional library schemes have proved inadequate. Modern schemes based on facet analysis offer a superior means of subject description related to the ways in which specialists think about their subject. The London Education Classification is based on facet analysis, and has also been used as the basis for a thesaurus which was the English contribution to the multilingual thesaurus compiled for the EUDISED project of the Council of Europe.
