A Way of Classifying and Measuring Some Aspects of the Illustration Style of Textbooks

Abstract

While pictures in textbooks can aid comprehension of the text and encourage reading, pictures themselves have to be ‘read’. The use of an inappropriate illustrative style may neither facilitate comprehension nor encourage textbook use.

A way of classifying and measuring the representation of the physical world and the use of metaphor in textbook illustrations, based on the information content, is described here. It can be used to provide data to help in the assessment of the value of a textbook's illustrations and to compare the illustrative styles of textbooks.

Tandis que les images de manuels peuvent aider a la comprehension du texte et aussi encourager la lecture, il faut egalement savoir ‘lire’ les images elles‐mêmes. L'emploi d'un style d'illustration qui ne convient pas peut ni faciliter la compréhension ni encourager l'usage du manuel.

On décrit ici une façon, fondée sur les informations représentées, de classer et de mesurer la représentation du monde physique et l'emploi de la metaphore dans Ies illustrations de manuel. On peut s'en servir pour pourvoir des donnees qui aident à évaluer les illustrations d'un manuel et pour comparer les styles d'illustration de manuels.

Bilder in Lehrbüchern können zwar dem Leser helfen, den Inhalt zu verstehen und ihm frischen Antrieb geben, denselben zu lesen, aber er muß diese Bilder verstehen können. Wird ein ungeeigneter Abbildungsstil gebraucht, so ist es möglich, daß weder Fassungsvermögen noch der Gebrauch des Lehrbuchs befördert wird.

Hier wird ein System beschrieben, die Darstellung der körperlichen Welt und den Gebrauch der Metapher in Lehrbuchabbildungen auf Grund des Inhalts zu klassifizieren und abzuschätzen. Es kann verwendet werden, gegebene Tatsachen zu liefern, die einem helfen, den Wert der Lehrbuchabbildungen abzuwägen und den Abbildungsstil von verschiedenen Lehrbüchern zu vergleichen.
