Instructional Systems Design: An Appropriate Technology for Developing NationsAbstract

Instructional systems design (ISD) has been advanced as an appropriate technology for developing nations. When used as a heuristic technique to guide educational innovation, it has been found to be effective. However, ISD can only be rightly called an ‘appropriate technology’ when adapted by developing nations to serve their own interests, not when rigidly imposed from the outside. Although many barriers exist to realizing such an appropriate ISD technology, the effort appears well worthwhile.
