The Reference Manual as a Learning Aid: The Case of Computer Software

Abstract

Manuals for computer software generally have a bad reputation for their reliability, design and usability which a home learner finds particularly off‐putting. Although undeniably deserved in many cases, this paper argues that the reputation is partly due to both the software producers and the users not understanding the purpose of their manuals properly and, in particular, not making the important functional distinction between ‘training materials’ and “reference materials’. The reference documentation available to a learner trying to understand a software product could be improved by applying some basic principles of good design; some suggestions are outlined.
