Pages 76-83 | Published online: 09 Jul 2006

SUMMARY

This paper examines the development of Records of Achievement and the use of portfolios as frameworks for the assessment of prior learning from work and other experiences. It overviews developments in schools, further and higher education and professional practice and examines the rationale for recording achievement in higher education and the implications for assessment practice. The paper includes a proposed format for a higher education record of achievement developed during a recent project run by the South East Education Consortium (SEEC): Guidelines for Credit and a Regional Credit Agency.
