OBITUARY

In Memoriam: Ronan Paddison (1945–2019)

It is with a heavy heart that Space & Polity announce the death of founder (from 1997 -) of the journal and for over two decades Editor-in-Chief Professor Ronan Paddison on 8th July 2019. Under Ronan’s stewardship Space & Polity has become a globally recognized and highly respected outlet for the very best research on Political Geography. A special issue of Space & Polity celebrating Ronan’s contributions to Political Geography will be published in 2020. ‘Paddison Geographies’ more broadly will continue to inform the journal as it strives to do justice to the vision and mission Ronan pioneered and championed. Ronan is survived by his wife Lesley and sons Andrew, Angus and Alistair.

Professor Mark Boyle, Editor-in-Chief, Space & Polity

This special issue is dedicated to the memory of Ronan Paddison (1945–2019), Editor in-Chief of Space & Polity, who worked with us throughout its preparation and production. We never had the pleasure of meeting Ronan, but through extensive correspondence over the past year we all felt as if we had known him for much longer. Ronan responded enthusiastically when we first pitched the idea for this Issue, supported us throughout the phases of submission and revisions, and provided continuous insight and inspiration until the very end. Thank you Ronan; your memory will live on with all of us.

Giulia Carabelli, Guest Editor of Space & Polity Special Issue on Mostar

We were devastated at Taylor & Francis to hear the sad news of Ronan passing away. I worked with Ronan for over 20 years, first on Urban Studies and then on the launch and development of Space & Polity. As an Editor, he was always calm and unflappable despite managing a very high volume of submissions. Personally, I enjoyed his wry sense of humor and his generous hospitality at Glasgow. I’m very pleased that we will be publishing a special issue in 2020 dedicated to Ronan’s work on Political Geography and his spirit will live on in Space & Polity, the journal he devised and founded.

Jessica Vivian, Global Portfolio Director, Social Sciences, Routledge Taylor & Francis
