When the above article was first published online, the 4th sentence of paragraph 1 on page 8, between Tables 2 and 3, read: "In 2009–12, public investment was cut back by 58 per cent in Spain, 55 per cent in Greece, 48 per cent in Portugal, and even 26 per cent in Italy". In fact, all figures refer to 2009–13. This has now been corrected in both the online and print versions.
