Abstract
This article reviews five studies carried out in recent years which demonstrated important methods and messages in relation to the rights of young people in contact with social work services. Common conclusions are reached about the importance to young people of having trusting and mutually respectful relationships with carers and professionals. Not only are these qualities valued by young people, but they also open the way to behavioural change and family mediation. When young people are in care it is also important to investigate carefully their preferences and typical ways of relating to optimise the chances of placements working successfully.
