Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on care issues which have an enormous influence on the well-being of the preterm infant in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (N.I.C.U.). Although the paper discusses the issues in the context of the nurse, it is directed to any and all carers of preterm infants in neonatal intensive care units. It is argued that the way preterm infants are cared for in the N.I.C.U. affects their well-being. Environmental factors such as noise, light, temperature and general comfort; carer factors such as touch, voice and handling and infant factors such as sleep and rest affect the well-being of the infant. The paper continues to suggest ways in which carers can use their knowledge and skills to influence these factors for the improved well being of the preterm infant.
