Abstract

The blue phases are, to those liquid crystal scientists who have not studied them, a somewhat obscure and esoteric branch of the field. However to those who have had a chance to see them in a microscope glowing with an iridescent multitude of colours and to study them in depth, they represent some of the most beatiful and complex of the liquid crystal phases.
