The state of knowledge and research in the field of transportation stresses is surveyed, with particular focus on the transport of dangerous goods. Some major projects, recently completed (such as the national German projects on testing of packaging and tanks for dangerous goods) or just being started (such as the joint European projects SRETS and 'Chempack') provide information to be developed further. Additional information has been collected and analysed within this project. This includes a questionnaire regarding the transportation sector's views and experience on goods damage, supplemented by some interviews. Measurements have been carried out in order to get a clear picture of the stress levels and problem areas that exist in today's transportation chains. Finally an analysis of existing test methods is presented and some tools for further work (such as a statistical approach) are highlighted.
