Crack initiation and propagation in thermal die steel

Pages 279-282 | Published online: 05 Nov 2010

Thermal fatigue crack initiation and propagation in a new type of thermal die steel 4Cr2NiMoV have been investigated experimentally. On the basis of a modified Coffin-Manson equation, a new quantitative expression for calculating the number of cycles to crack initiation has been developed, and its validity has been proved by test results. The characteristics of thermal crack propagation and of fatigue fractography are discussed briefly.
