Quality control methods for avoiding errors caused by misuse of computers

Advances in the scientific and commercial sectors have leapt ahead of conventional building system construction techniques. However, recent breakthroughs in information technology including high speed computers have enabled design engineers to develop efficient facilities that will permit corporations and institutions to keep abreast of the business environment projected for the twenty-first century. The advances in design technology must include the integration of sophisticated quality control methods as part of this process, and an overview is presented of computer based methods for quality control for use with these new digital tools. New digital tools include the computer charrette, computer optimization and integrated computer design required for the new generation of smart structures. This overview emphasizes the growing reliance on computers and outlines caveats that will help avoid misuse of information technology through believed dependence on computers that can lead to fatal errors. The aerospace industry has led in advanced technology and has developed optimum levels of quality assurance for technical systems. The design of aerospace support facilities for sophisticated vehicles had lagged behind until recently when a new generation of smart buildings was developed. Information technology and high speed computers are used to facilitate fast effective design and construction of this new type of structure for the third millenium.
