The cultural production of ability in drawing

Pages 45-54 | Accepted 19 Jun 1997, Published online: 28 Jul 2006

Abstract

This paper argues for a more inclusive approach towards assessing pupils' observational drawings and an expanded comprehension of ability in drawing practices. With reference to the work of Foucault and Lucan, the paper examines the constitutive processes of assessment of drawing ability and argues that such ability is not a natural possession, but a production of specific practices and discourses in the field of art in education.
