Yesterday and Today: Reflecting on Past Practice to Help Build and Strengthen the Researcher Partnership at Monash University

ORCID Icon

ABSTRACT

Librarians at universities continue to seek new ways to engage and partner with researchers in order to enhance and enrich the way that they work. This article looks at some of the ways that libraries have been doing this in recent years, what has worked, and what needs to be done to continue to develop these important partnerships. These recommendations will be based on the experiences of Monash University Library, in particular its recent implementation of Figshare for Institutions. The article includes discussion of such topics where libraries have sought partnerships with researchers, such as Open Access, research data management, and capability building, and will focus on the importance of working with researchers to understand their needs.

Notes

1 Incidentally this latter factor in the subsequent uptake of electronic journals in Australia should not be underestimated. Before this journals came by sea, which meant a minimum three-month delay, assuming that the issue had actually been shipped and not damaged along the way. The smell of a journal that had been exposed to sea water by a tiny hole in the plastic bag, then left to marinate in it for 3 months was something to be experienced.

2 It is worth noting that this occurred far more quickly in the STEM disciplines than the Arts and Humanities. But even those latter fields are accessing more of what they need online.

4 There are efforts underway to nuance this better such as the CRediT Taxonomy http://casrai.org/credit

5 Engineering Index is online as Engineering Village - http://www.engineeringvillage.com/ and ASTIA is the Defence Technical Information Centre - http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/ - since moved to Fort Belvoir

6 Although this did represent an increase on the 2012 survey.

7 See http://www.ands.org.au/working-with-data/data-management for an excellent summary of the wide range of research data management.

8 Monash Library worked with IT services and the Monash eResearch Centre to develop the University Research Data Policy in 2009–10.
