Abstract
In collaboration with hundreds of citizen's groups, International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War has launched Abolition 2000, a movement for a signed global agreement by the year 2000 for the elimination of nuclear weapons according to a fixed timetable. This paper reviews the background to Abolition 2000: the negotiations for a comprehensive test ban treaty; the initiative for the International Court of Justice to pronounce on the legality of nuclear weapons; and the need for global security with the elimination of poverty and action against environmental degradation.
