ABSTRACT

The paper presents a study on the seismic behavior of irregular unreinforced masonry buildings, aiming at evaluating the effects of higher modes. First, the macroelement model implemented in the TREMURI software and used in this study was validated, based on shake table tests. Then, the extended N2 method, taking into account the in-plan and in-elevation irregularities, was applied to two case studies and compared with respect to the nonlinear dynamic analysis. The results showed that the method is able to simulate correctly the seismic response of both irregular masonry buildings.

Notes

1. As the half-scale models were tested, according to the Cauchy similitude law, the artificial accelerograms were multiplied by the scale factor 2 to be applied to the models. Therefore, the input PGA of the seismic test of 100% was 0.3 g.

2. This refers to the test of 250% for the symmetric model with the actual PGA (the PGA measured at the base of the model) of 1.06 and 1.33 g in the X- and Y-directions, respectively; and the test of 150% for the asymmetric model with the actual PGA of 1.07 and 0.66 g in the same directions.
