Promoting the inclusion of students at risk of exclusion

An evaluative case study

Pages 236-250 | Published online: 05 Sep 2006

Abstract

In response to concern about the rise in exclusions from school, which was becoming increasingly apparent by 1995, the DfEE provided opportunities through GEST (Standards) funding for LEAs to bid for three types of project designed to reduce exclusions from school: multidisciplinary behaviour support teams; in-school centres; and secondment of teachers from mainstream schools to pupil referral units (PRUs). The centre described in this article was set up as one of the ‘in-school centres’. What follows is a description of the model that was developed and an evaluation that was conducted prior to its closure.
