Abstract
The fractal characteristics of fracture surface of gray cast iron has been studied and the fractal dimensions of tensile fracture surfaces of the iron produced under variable technological conditions were measured with vertical cross section method. A new parameter a%, namely percent of primary dendrite in fracture profile, was proposed. Results show that fractal dimension (DF) increases with the increase in a%. Meanwhile, there exists an exponential relationship between a% or DF and tensile strength. The effect of chemical components on the fractal dimension of the fracture surface was discussed. Finally, the fractal model of fracture surface of gray iron was proposed.
